Lester Francis Marvin was born on April 17, 1919, in Colwell, Floyd County, Iowa. He was the son of Walter Lee Marvin and Pearl Emery Marvin. He was married to Rita Melanie Corbesia Schneider. After graduating from Orchard High School, he worked in the Orchard area before entering the U.S. Army in January 1942. He completed infantry training at Camp Wolters and Fort Sam Houston in Texas, participated in maneuvers in Louisiana, and finished his training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
In October 1943, SSgt Marvin was sent overseas, serving in Ireland and England before entering France, where he was wounded in early August 1944, returned to duty after recovering, and was killed in action on September 2, 1944, just eight days after rejoining his unit at the front. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, USA.
