William Bowditch Long Jr. was born on September 11, 1918, in Cohasset, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of William Bowditch Long and Harriet Bayley Long. He was married to Dorothy Storer Long. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Second Lieutenant during World War II.

2Lt Long was Killed in Action on August 26, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
