Joseph Walter Knowles was born on August 6, 1919, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Aloysius Charles Knowles and Sarah Jenny Howe. He was married to Elizabeth Rita Sands Knowles. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Corporal during World War II.

Cpl Knowles was Killed in Action on August 29, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
