Ezra A. Kauffman was born on October 13, 1923, in Kenmare, Ward County, North Dakota. He was the son of Alpha A. Kauffman and Alma Elizabeth Nusbaum Kauffman. He completed one year of high school and worked as a roofer and slater before being inducted into the Army on March 23, 1943, in Spokane, Washington. He served in the 5th Ranger Battalion as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt Kauffman died from his wounds received in battle on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
