Ralph Alford Johns was born on August 7, 1919, in Tamina, Montgomery County, Texas. He was the son of Alford Warren Johns and Lillie Margaret Dikeman Johns. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.

SSgt Johns was Killed in Action on September 3, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
