James Albert “Junior” Futch Jr. was born on May 23, 1925, in Bulloch County, Georgia. He was the son of Jacob Albert Futch and Mary Ellen Sheffield Futch. He attended Warnock School. In 1942, he and his brother William were drafted into the U.S. Army, and he was trained as a rifleman and shipped overseas in early 1944. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Futch was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
