Clarence Elmer Ellwein was born on November 30, 1907, in Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Harry Elmer Ellwein and Ida Susan Fauth Ellwein. He was married to Grace Mae Dentler Ellwein. He was employed as a guard by the York Safe and Lock Company before entering the army on September 16, 1943. He served in the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Ellwein was Killed in Action on September 2, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
