Robert Thomas Donnell was born on February 16, 1921, in Wilson County, Tennessee. He was the son of Alexander Clarence Donnell and Frances Ethelyne "Ethel" Turner Donnell. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Donnell was Killed in Action on August 31, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Baird Graveyard, Norene, Wilson County, Tennessee, USA.
