Robert Elmo De Loach was born on March 19, 1920, in Remerton, Lowndes County, Georgia. He was the son of General D. De Loach and Melba Lucretia "Mettie" Corbett De Loach. He was married to Frances Cowart Bagley. He worked for a grocery company before entering the service on October 13, 1941. He served in the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Sergeant during World War II.

Sgt De Loach was Killed in Action on August 31, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery and Hickory Grove Cemetery.
