Roy Arthur De Yonghe was born on July 22, 1915, in Iowa. He was the son of Peter J. De Yonghe and Emily Marie Puymbrouck De Yonghe. He was married to Shirley Marie Dickinson. He attended Beaverton High School. Before entering the Army on August 25, 1943, he worked for Timber Structures, Inc. and the Eastern & Western Lumber Company. He completed his training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and Fort Benning, Georgia, before going overseas for the invasion. He was later stationed at St. Lo, Normandy. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.
Pvt De Yonghe was Killed in Action on August 25, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
