Donald Burke was born on July 24, 1911, in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan. He was the son of Samuel Joseph Burke and Anna Kennedy. He was married to Mary Louise Talmadge. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Burke was Killed in Action on September 1, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, USA.
