James Wilber Baber was born on March 25, 1921, in Woodford County, Kentucky. He was the son of Jesse William Baber and Ethel Semones Baber. He graduated from Mortonsville Elementary School and was engaged in farming before entering the service. He entered the service on September 9, 1942, and received his training in Arkansas and at Camp Carson, Colorado, before going overseas in June 1944. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Baber was Killed in Action on August 29, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
