Robert Ward Babcock was born on November 6, 1920, in Cattaraugus, Cattaraugus County, New York. He was the son of Samuel Bradley Conkeya and Jessie Mae Babcock Hinman. He was married to Violet Lee Babcock. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.
SSgt Babcock was Killed in Action on August 29, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Liberty Park Cemetery, Cattaraugus, Cattaraugus County, New York, USA.
