Comments:

Stanley P. Appleby was a U.S. Army Technician Fourth Grade who served as a medical aidman with the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division during World War II.

On June 6, 1944, he demonstrated remarkable courage under intense German artillery and machine-gun fire. Disembarking roughly fifty yards offshore, he faced a surf filled with wounded soldiers who were at risk of drowning. Ignoring his own safety, Appleby repeatedly waded back into the water to pull casualties toward the beach and immediately provided lifesaving first aid. He continued his work on the sand amid relentless enemy fire, never slowing in his efforts to treat the wounded. For his extraordinary heroism, unwavering bravery, and selfless devotion to duty, Appleby was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Currently, we don't have details about his death and burial location.
