After the family returned to the United States in 1917, they settled in San Francisco, where Ed completed his education. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1932 with high academic honors and held the rank of R.O.T.C. Captain. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1933 and served a year at Fort Winfield Scott. Calif, he entered the U.S. Military Academy. He graduated from his Class in 1938 and was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps. His first station was Fort Winfield Scott, where he served until April 1939, and then went to the Philippines for a tour of duty.

Edgar married Norma Hueter on March 17, 1939, and the couple arrived at Corregidor on May 28, 1939.
