Charles Sherman “Charlie” Hoyt Jr. was born on November 11, 1914. He graduated from RCC in 1930 before attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1937. He served in the 45th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, as a Major during World War II.
Captured after the fall of the Philippines, he was held as a prisoner of war at PW Camp #1 in Cabanatuan. In December 1944, he was placed aboard the Oryoku Maru to be transported to Japan. The ship departed on December 13 and was attacked by American aircraft the following day. Although the assault was briefly halted as night fell, it resumed on December 15. Major Hoyt was killed during the bombardment. His remains were never recovered.
Maj Hoyt's name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
