Paul Douglas Wood was born on November 28, 1907, in Seattle, King County, Washington. He was the son of Winthrop Samuel Wood and Pauline Lydia Culler Wood. He was married to Dorothy Wood. He attended the Gettysburg Academy and later graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1933. He was commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 57th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts, a unit that in 1941 was composed primarily of American officers and Filipino men.
On April 7, 1942, while his unit was repositioning near Lamao, Bataan, they came under sudden enemy attack at the junction of Trail 10 and Trail 2, where Major Wood was killed in action. His remains were never recovered. Maj Wood's name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
