Samuel McFarland McReynolds Jr. was born on January 28, 1912, in Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. He was the son of Samuel McFarland McReynolds Sr. and Julia Cunningham Borden McReynolds. He was married to Maude Elizabeth "Sue" Mann Darch. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1933. He served in the Coast Artillery Corps as a Captain during World War II.
Cpt McReynolds was captured following the fall of Bataan and Corregidor. After surviving the Bataan Death March, he endured three shipwrecks and severe mistreatment by his captors, ultimately dying of acute colitis in the Kokura Military Prison Hospital on February 1, 1945. He is now buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
