Samuel Edward Jones was born on August 1, 1908, in Henry County, Kentucky. He was married to Irene T. "Reenie" Turner Clark. After graduating from Anderson County High School, he received an appointment to West Point from Congressman Joseph W. Norris and entered the Academy in July 1925, graduating in 1931. Upon graduating, Jones was commissioned in the 11th Infantry at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, and later served with the Civilian Conservation Corps Headquarters at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
In December 1934, Samuel was sent to the Philippines, where he took command of Company A, 31st Infantry in Manila and was promoted to First Lieutenant eight months later. In 1937, he returned to the United States, where Jones attended the Infantry School at Fort Benning. After graduating, he became a company commander in the 14th Infantry. When Samuel became eligible for overseas duty again, he requested assignment to the Philippines, returning in August 1940.
Maj Jones served in the Headquarters Company, 31st Infantry Regiment, Philippine Division, as tensions in the Pacific grew and Japan advanced toward the Philippines. He remained with his unit as war loomed, continuing to train for the very battle that soon came to pass, the defense of Bataan. He was Killed in Action on January 23, 1942, in Agaloma Point, Bataan. He is now buried in the New Castle Cemetery, New Castle, Henry County, Kentucky, USA.
