Albert Delmar Miller was born on August 22, 1898, in Pomeroy, Meigs County, Ohio. He was the son of Albert Perry Miller and Ella August Miller. He was married to Helen Elizabeth Miller. He graduated from West Point with the Class of 1924. He served in the 92nd Coast Artillery Regiment, Philippine Scouts, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.
LTC Miller was captured after the fall of Corregidor. He was held at PW Camp #2 in Davao, Mindanao, before being transported in 1944 toward Japan aboard the Hell Ship Arisan Maru. The ship, carrying 1,800 POWs, was sunk in the South China Sea on November 24, 1944, by the submarine USS Shark, which was unaware it held prisoners, making it the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history. During this ordeal, Miller attempted to escape but was shot by Japanese guards.
He was reported Missing in Action when his remains were lost when the Arisan Maru was sunk, and officially declared dead on October 24, 1944. His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph in the Mound Hill Cemetery, Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio, USA.
