James Robert Lindsay Jr. was born on July 7, 1899, in Kansas. He was the son of James Robert Lindsay and Eva Miller Lindsay. He was married to Martha Briscoe Foy. He was a West Point graduate of the Class of 1923. He served in the 23rd Field Artillery Regiment, Philippine Scouts, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.

LTC Lindsay was taken prisoner after the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. In December 1944, he was among 1,621 POWs loaded onto the hell ship Oryoku Maru, which was sunk by U.S. aircraft in Subic Bay. Surviving transfers to the Enoura Maru and then the Brazil Maru, he died from starvation and exposure on January 28, 1945, and was buried at sea. His remains were never recovered.

His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. He also has a cenotaph in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, USA.
