George Dewey Vanture was born on August 25, 1898, in Virginia. He was married to Mabel Evelyn Selman Vanture. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1920. He served in the Headquarters, 91st Philippine Infantry Division, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.
LTC Vanture was captured by the Japanese after the fall of Corregidor, Philippine Islands, on May 6, 1942, and was held as a prisoner of war at PW Camp #1 in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Some sources suggest he may have been executed, perished in the sinking of a ship or its aftermath, or been shot while attempting to escape. He was reported Missing in Action and officially declared dead on January 9, 1945.
His name is memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
