Howard Dohla Johnston was born on October 21, 1898, in Indiana. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1919. He served in the Headquarters, 2nd Philippine Corps, as a Lieutenant Colonel during World War II.

After the fall of Bataan, LTC Johnston was captured, taken prisoner, and held at PW Camp #1 - Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija Province, Luzon, Philippines. He died during captivity on July 2, 1942. He is now buried in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
