Robert Matter was born on January 16, 1891, in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He was the son of Phillip Matter and Lile Harter Matter. He was married to Dorothy Bippus Matter. He served as a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Ambulance Hospital of Paris and the American Field Service Section Three during World War I, where his service included operating in the Vosges during the battle at Hartmannswillerkopf in 1915.
Matter was later recognized as a World War I Navy veteran and also served in World War II as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He died on November 19, 1950, and is now buried in the Estates of Serenity, Marion, Grant County, Indiana, USA.
