Thomas Cushman Nathan was born on January 21, 1897. He enlisted in the Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps, trained in the U.S., then in England with the Royal Flying Corps, and was posted to Ayr, Scotland, as a First Lieutenant during World War I.
On March 20, 1918, during a mock combat, his aircraft’s wings collapsed after a sudden maneuver, and he was killed instantly. He is now buried in the Ayr Cemetery, Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland.
