Leon Henry Ericksen was born on April 17, 1901, in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. He was the son of Peter Hansen Ericksen and Caroline Christine "Carrie" Henschel Ericksen. He enlisted in the service on April 8, 1917. He served in the United States Naval Reserve Force during World War I as a Seaman, specializing as an Electrician and Radio Operator, and was last assigned to the U.S.S. Drechterland.

Seaman Ericksen died on May 6, 1919, from smallpox in Gibraltar. He is now buried in the North Front Cemetery, Gibraltar.
