Raymond George Schmitz was born on June 19, 1919, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Michael Schmitz and Ida B. Pestka Schmitz. He graduated from St. George High School in 1937. He enlisted in the Army in April 1941. He served in Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a First Lieutenant during World War II.

1Lt Schmitz was Killed in Action from a concussion caused by exploding ammunition on a burning truck on September 22, 1944, during Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands. He also has a cenotaph in the Saint Mary's Cemetery, Northbrook, Cook County, Illinois, USA.
