James W. Miller was born on February 18, 1924. He was the son of Clarence Franklin Miller and Faye N. Holcomb Miller. He worked at the Bunker Hill Naval Air Base and was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He enlisted in the Army on December 18, 1942. He served in Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.
On September 20, 1944, during Operation Market Garden, Easy Company engaged German forces. While retreating, Miller and another soldier provided cover fire when shrapnel struck him in the stomach, killing him. He is now buried in the Falls Cemetery, Wabash, Wabash County, Indiana, USA.
