Vernon J. Menze was born on September 10, 1924. He was the son of Walt and Ann Menze. He joined the Army in 1943 as a paratrooper and participated in the D-Day invasion of France in June 1944. He served in Company E, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.
PFC Menze participated in the paratrooper invasion of Eindhoven, Holland, on September 17, 1944. Three days later, on September 20, while advancing toward Nuenen with Allied forces, his unit was ambushed by German troops, including Panzers, and he was killed in action. He is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.
