Robert Van Klinken was born on October 31, 1919, in Loomis, Okanogan County, Washington. He was the son of Wolter "Walter" Van Klinken and Cora Vandercreek Van Klinken. In 1942, he enlisted at Fort Lewis, joined the Paratroopers, and became a bazooka man and Private First Class in Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. After training at Camp Toccoa and Fort Benning, he deployed to England in September 1943.

On June 6, 1944, he parachuted into Normandy for D-Day and later fought in the Battle of Carentan, where he was wounded while assisting a fellow soldier. After recovering in England, he rejoined Easy Company for Operation Market Garden. On September 20, 1944, during the battle in Nuenen, he was wounded by machine gun fire while attempting to retrieve a bazooka. He succumbed to his injuries that night. Van Klinken is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten.
