Richard Sutherland Dale was born in 1795. He was the son of Richard Dale and Dorothy Crathorne Dale. He served in the United States Navy as a Midshipman and served aboard the USS President (44-gun frigate) under Commodore Stephen Decatur during the War of 1812.
On January 14, 1815, despite the Treaty of Ghent being signed on December 24, 1814, news had not yet reached North America. While serving aboard the USS President, Dale was wounded during an engagement with a British squadron off Long Island, resulting in the amputation of his leg.
Captured and taken to Bermuda, Dale was housed in Stennett’s Hotel, where he died on February 22, 1815, at age 20. He was buried at St. Peter’s Churchyard in St. George’s, Bermuda, with a marble monument erected by his family in gratitude for the care he received.
