Darryl Lee Shirley was born on April 20, 1965, in Indiana. He was the son of Dorothy Mariah Gilbert Lee. He enlisted in the US Army on September 21, 1983. He served in Battery C, 3rd Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, as a Private First Class during the Cold War.
On January 11, 1985, a Pershing II missile's first stage exploded during an assembly at Camp Redleg in Heilbronn, Germany, killing three U.S. Army soldiers including PFC Shirley, and injuring sixteen others. He is now buried in the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, Irving, Dallas County, Texas, USA.
