Lieutenant J. L. Callan, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #1442 in 1918. A direct commission, having been taught to fly by Glenn Curtiss in 1912 and a Curtiss Aeroplane Co. employee from 1912 to 1914. Saw service in Europe during the First World War. Released from active duty in 1923 with rank of Commander. Recalled to active duty in 1940, serving until 1947. Retired in 1948 with rank of Rear Admiral, USNR. Navy Cross Citation: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Commander John L. Callan, United States Navy (Reserve Force), for distinguished and heroic service as a Seaplane Pilot in which capacity he made many flights for patrolling the sea and bombing the enemy coasts, showing at all times courage and a high spirit of duty.
