Oscar "Mick" Wagelie was born on May 19, 1922, in Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington. He was married to Mary Nora Bruce Wagelie. He served in the 409th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner of B-24J #42-100345 during World War II.
On March 2, 1944, Oscar's aircraft was shot down by flak during a mission to Frankfurt am Main and crashed east of Albert at Fricourt, France. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft IV in Braunau, near Krems, Austria. He survived the infamous "Death March" across Germany, an 83-day journey in which many of his comrades perished. SSgt Wagelie died on May 30, 2009, and is now buried in the Blaine Cemetery, Blaine, Whatcom County, Washington, USA.
