Wilbert Howard Nichols was born on August 29, 1924, in Athens, Athens County, Ohio. He was the son of Kenneth Vale Nichols and Allie Mae Carlton Nichols. He was married to Georgianna Jane Bartlett Koehler Edgerly. He served in the 334th Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, as a Technical Sergeant and Waist Gunner of B-17 #4239924 'Tornado' during World War II.
Wilbert's B-24 bomber was shot on May 24, 1944, he was captured by German forces, and was held as a POW in Stalag Luft IV in Braunau, near Krems, Austria. He survived the infamous "Death March" across Germany, an 83-day journey in which many of his comrades perished. Wilbert died on September 29, 1965, and is now buried in the Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, USA.
