Philip served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 5, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. Pvt Chester is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
