Thomas Lee Gillespie was born on December 15, 1917, in Smyth County, Virginia. He was the son of G. Stephen Gillespie and Mary Susan "Susie" Louthen Gillespie. He was a farmer before entering the service on April 19, 1941.

Thomas served in the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II. He was Killed in Action on August 5, 1944, during the liberation of Vire, France. SSgt Gillespie is now buried in the Riverside Church Cemetery, Saltville, Smyth County, Virginia, USA.
