William Notley served as Staff Sergeant in the 35th Infantry Division. After joining the 35th Division on July 11, 1944, Notley and his fellow soldiers advanced through northern France, entering Saint-Lô on July 18 and liberating numerous towns en route to Mortain.

After the war, Notley remained connected to France, making multiple visits starting in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the liberation. Through the 35th Santa Fe Association, founded by Giéville's mayor, Guy Lacour, Notley returned to attend commemorations and unveil memorials honoring the liberators. Notably, in 2008, he unveiled a plaque in a wooded area in Guilberville named after him. He continued to attend commemorative events, including his final visit in 2014, marking 70 years since the liberation. Notley passed away on September 1, 2015, at 91, but his current burial place is unknown.
