John L. Walkmeister was born on June 9, 1915, in Santa Clara County, California. He was the son of Louis George Walkmeister and Clarice L. Votaw Walkmeister.

John served in the 1st Regiment, First Special Service Force, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on August 16, 1944, during the liberation of Port-Cros, France. Sgt Walkmeister was buried at sea and is now memorialized in the Tablets of the Missing in Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, Draguignan, Departement du Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France.
