After landing on Utah Beach on June 20, 1944, B Company of the 300th Engineer Combat Battalion, commanded by Major John Tucker, arrived in the Carentan sector. One of his first missions was to re-establish a passage over the Taute between Carentan and Saint-Hilaire-Petitville. The area was still under enemy artillery fire, which caused casualties and delayed the work. Major Tucker died on June 27, 1944, when a piece of shrapnel mortally struck him and killed him instantly while supervising a bridge construction in Carentan les Marais. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados, Basse-Normandie, France.Source of information: www.normandie44lamemoire.com
