Alfred Eugene Makins was born on November 18, 1915, in Abilene, Dickinson County, Kansas. He was the son of Francis Charles Makins and Katherine Johanna "Katie" Berrigan Makins. He was married to Mary Jean Grentner Minnick. Alfred was a standout student at Kansas State Agricultural College, graduating in 1940 with a commission through the ROTC program. After graduation, he worked as a journalist before joining the Army

Alfred served in the 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, as a Captain during World War II. He was Killed in Action on September 29, 1944, in Laveline-du-Houx, France. Cpt Makins is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
