George William Hewett was born on October 26, 1917, in Bayard, Morrill County, Nebraska. He was the son of Thomas John Hewett and Mary Alice "Alice" Pearson Hewett. George served in the 561st Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and the Tail Gunner of the B-17F 42-30207 'Big Red' during World War II.

On March 27, 1944, his plane took off from station #136 around 10:19 am at Knettishall, England, for a mission in Bordeaux-Merignac airfield. His plane was shot down by flak and exploded in Azienay. Sgt Hewett was taken as a POW. He died on May 3, 2002, and is now buried in Pea Ridge Cemetery, Pea Ridge, Benton County, Arkansas, USA.
