Alex John Szima was born on May 24, 1920. He was married to Madeline Szima. Alex served in the Headquarters Company, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. Szima was considered an excellent marksman. He was almost mortally wounded in the Battle of Mount Cassino near Venafro in November 1943. He underwent 3 years of reconstructive surgery at Valley Forge. Sgt Szima died on September 13, 2006, and is now buried in Dayton National Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA.
