Marcell Galen Swank was born on December 17, 1922. He was married to Lillian Rose Vornbrock Swank. Marcell served in the Headquarters Company, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Sergeant during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942 and was wounded. He was transferred into HQ Company, 4th Ranger Battalion when it was created. Swank also continued his service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. LtCol Swank died on May 23, 1991, and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
