John H. Smith was born on January 20, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in Company C, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Technician 5th Grade during World War II. He was transferred to Company E, 3rd Ranger Battalion. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He stayed with the Rangers through the entire tour and came home with 197 other Rangers on May 3, 1944. T5 Smith died on December 9, 1991, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
