Roy Alexander Murray Jr. was born on March 9, 1909, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the husband of Donny D. Murray.

Roy served in Company F, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Captain during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and became the commanding officer of the 4th Ranger Battalion. Murray was awarded the Silver Star Medal for knocking out an enemy cannon at Sened Station in Tunisia. He was wounded in action while fighting in the mountains of Venafro, Italy, and earned a Purple Heart. He returned home on May 3, 1944, on the USS Edward Richardson. He ended his service as a Colonel.

Colonel Murray died on December 16, 1998, and is now buried in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, USA.
