Howard Theodore Hedenstad was born on July 10, 1919, in Dakota County, Minnesota. He was married to Elizabeth Amelia "Betty" Everson Hedenstad.

Howard served in the 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He fought in the Battle of Cisterna, Italy, and was captured by the Germans on January 30, 1944. Hedenstad remained a POW at Stalag VII-B until his release on June 23, 1945. Howard finished his service as a Staff Sergeant. SSgt Hedenstad died on May 23, 1981, and is now buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Maplewood, Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA.
