William Sheldon Girdley was born on May 27, 1921, in Martin County, Indiana. He was the son of William Alexander Girdley and Sarah Anna Stuffle Summerville. He was married to Hazel Josephine Hamilton Girdley.
Girdley served in Company D, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. PFC Girdley died on April 30, 1996, and is now buried in Scotland Cemetery, Scotland, Greene County, Indiana, USA.
