James Oliver Edwards was born on January 11, 1913, in Hays, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Maria Jane Sowers Edwards.
Edwards served in the 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Private First Class during World War II. He was promoted to T/5. He was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He remained with Company C, 1st Ranger Battalion, and incurred a bullet wound in the invasion of Arzew on November 10, 1942. T5 Edwards returned to duty in January 1943 while in Algeria. He died on May 6, 1971, and is now buried in Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA.
