Lloyd N. Church was born on July 1, 1923, in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Curtis McKinley Church and Louise Finton Church Smith. He was married to Frances Ruth Evertsen Hildebrand.
Lloyd served in Company A, 1st Ranger Battalion, as a Sergeant during World War II. Sgt Church was one of 50 US Army Rangers who participated with British Commando on the Dieppe raid in 1942. He received a serious head wound before being captured by the Germans. A German surgeon operated and replaced a part of his skull with a medal plate. He remained a POW at Stalag VII-B until the end of the war. Sgt Church returned home after being liberated. He never really fully recovered from his head wounds. He died on November 11, 1950, and is now buried in Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, USA.
